Zippy the lap quilt (EZ Dresden Challenge)

Yup that’s what I’m naming this quilt I did for the Dresden Challenge. . .

Rewind a little, when Elisa asked me a month ago if I was going to help promote the EZ Dresden Challenge I thought, Sure why the hell not. But have I done dresdens before? Nope. That’s right – I’ve never done a dresden block.

Luckily for me there’s a boat load of great tutorials online to help me (and you). The best one that comes to mind is from Elizabeth Hartman for Sew, Mama, Sew.
Dresden Block Tutorial

(Dresden Plate Block Sew-Along by Elizabeth Hartman on Sew, Mama, Sew)

Another great resource is youtube.com, here’s a great video by the Missouri Quilt Company on how to make a dresden block:

One of the first things I bought when I got into quilting was the easy dresden ruler by Darlene Zimmerman:

Easy Dresden Ruler

(about $10.00)

With any project, when I need inspiration – I head to flickr.  There’s a couple of great groups that are dedicated to just dresdens:

Dresden Plates in Quilting

Delicious Dresden Plates

Dresden Favorites

(Small sample of my favorites)

You know what’s the best for dresdens fabricwise?  Precuts!  That’s right grab that charm pack, layer cake, or fat quarter bundles and go to town with your dresden rulers.

I had a handful of r.k new kona charms and v&c0′s simply color and thought they would go great together. . what do you think?

Simply color + new kona solids

(the coke can is to show you how tiny the dresdens are)

I thought about layout for a while and made them alternate like so. . and in all honesty, I wasn’t thinking of making a quilt just a small mini in hopes to inspire the group:

I had so many blades that I thought I should put them in a quilt. . so I zig-zag stitched them to 12.5×12.5 kona white squares and then sewed the blocks together and it looked like this (doesn’t it remind you of a zipper??? Hence the name of the quilt):

Dresden blocks sewn together

At this point, I’m starting to doubt my design, but I’m too far down the rabbit hole.

I did a random excel spreadsheet to show what the quilt would look like. I’m really drawn to green, pink, blue, and orange colorways right now.

Well after some really late night sewing sessions here’s what my EZ Dresden quilt looks like (if you’re interested in the pattern I’ll update this post later on with the dimensions of each block):

EZ Dresden Quilting Challenge

Oh no. . . Purse Palooza 2012 will have to be put on the back burner for a couple days. . .(yeah ever get those days where you’ve over committed to things, trust me they’re awesome things if I only had all the time in the world)

It’s actually time for the EZ Dresden Quilting Challenge!

The Salt Lake Modern quilt guild has partnered up with EZ Quilting to host this awesome challenge.  The challenge is to celebrate Darlene Zimmerman‘s 20th anniversary with EZ quilting.  Here’s the details:

  • Follow along June 2-14 with some of our favorite bloggers (some you may know, and others who might be new to you). Plus meet some of our talented guild members along the way.
  • Work like the dickens from June 15-August 31 on your project.
  • Come back here Sept 1-6 for a Linky Party to enter your creation(s). MARK YOUR CALENDERS
  • Wait patiently while the judges do their thing, then see who wins on September 17.
  • Winning quilts get tons of prizes (with random drawings too) PLUS they get to have their quilts displayed in the EZ Quilting/Simplicity booth at the 2012 Fall Quilt Market. How awesome is that?!

You can find all the nitty gritty details here. Be sure to grab our button (on the right) and add it to your blog so others can play along.
EZ Dresden Challenge
(this is the prj I’m working on to show ya’ll)

We’ve planned three categories (small, traditional design, and innovative design) to cover quilters with all styles. Plus, the bloggers cover a range of styles as well so you are sure to be inspired! Along the way bloggers will be giving away rulers to lucky winners. No worries if you don’t win, you can order a ruler here or pick one up at your LQS. NOTE: You aren’t required to use the ruler on your project but it sure would be a nice way to support Darlene.

To get your creative juices flowing The Alliance for American Quilts (one of our generous sponsors) has put together a Pinterest  page with  examples of Dresden Plate quilts included in their Quilt Index. Feel free to pin Dresden quilts that blow your skirt up if you’re into that sort of thing.

Prizes:

Judges will select their five favorites from each of the three categories then decide as a team the 1st, 2nd, and 3rdPlace winners. We’ll use a random number generator to divy up the rest of the loot.
